  1. Hi!

Just wanted to share one of my ‘Home Run’ stories with you regarding a $2.00 purchase I made for an item from Goodwill. I was browsing thru Goodwill one afternoon and saw this item that appeared to be in mint condition. At the time, I didn’t even know what it was or what it maybe used for?!? It was made by Chrysler (saw the emblem stamped on it) and folded. Anyway, I ended up buying it for approximately $2.00. After getting it home, I made a call to the local Chrysler Dealership parts department and inquired about it. Turns out that it was a boot for convertibles…It’s used to cover the back area of a vehicle once the convertible top is down and in place.

So, I placed it on eBay with a starting bid of $9.99 (maybe less) and it ended up selling for a little over $160! I also got a free boot from a friend of mine, who traded her convertible in, but forgot to put the boot in the truck with the trade. Anyway, I listed that one too and sold it for around the same price!

  2. My best, most favorite story is this one. I attended an Estate Sale here in LA (Lower Alabama, don’t you know) and made many fine purchases, among them a couple of those old tin document boxes that are painted black and gold. As I was checking out, I rattled one of them and said to the checkout people, “this one has something in it!” to which they replied “Whatever is in it is yours also.” Goody, I love surprises. Got home and checked out the contents of the box and found 25 things that looked like possibly old poker chips, well that is a MAN THING, I said to myself. I proceeded to ask all my antiquing boy buddies, what are these??? No one knew and I shelved them for a year. Well in cleaning out the ole eBay room I decided that I had nothing to lose (didn’t cost me a dime) so I would just put them on eBay. Since I liked the looks of them, I kept one out making the lot 24 pieces. Within 3 hours the bid was over $300.00 and I had several guys asking me to sell them off eBay - NO NO NO, I said, I don’t break the rules knowingly. Long story short, the bid closed at $688.00 for the 24 19th century IVORY Handpainted and etched poker chips. Yippee! I of course have more stories, but this is the very best turning $0.00 into $688.00!

  3. So many times we hear about ‘great find’ treasure stories and ask ourselves why it never happens to us. I think many of us overlook these hidden treasures because we’re at a garage sale, estate sale or goodwill, with no reference information available to us to make a quick decision as to what something is or what it’s worth. Does anyone know of a service (individual or business) who offers online searching of helpful information with a quick phone call ? The service could be free, but paid for by outside sponsors, like the free phone number information, paid for by advertising sponsors.
Maybe I should go into that business !
Any information out there for something like that ?

  4. Greetings fellow inhabitors of planet earth, my favorite home run story involves a box of vinyl records that I purchased at an estate sale. After browsing the sale and haggling for the bobals and trinkets that I had found I asked my familiar question - Do you have any vinly record albums? The reply was “yes, upstairs in a closet, we did not think that anyone would be interested in old records”. Like most people this couple figured that the vinyl record format had gone by way of the dinosaur. The gentleman took me to the records as they were to heavy for him to carry. I started to look through them when he said I could have the whole box of records for twenty dollars if I just hauled them away. The first few records that I looked at were worth the price of addmission so I took him up on the deal without looking at the rest, packed the recordsup in the car and went on to the next sale. There was about 95 records in the box, few christmas records few childrens records and an onslaught of 1950’s and 1960’s rock n’ roll, with a few of the titles unopened ie “beatles 65″, “Robert Gordon Black Slacks”, despite the handfulls of $100. records the real prize was an autographed by all four beatles “Meet the Beatles” (Canada) wow - This was the true first North American Beatles Release. (North American being Canada not U.S. which was “Introducing the Beatles” on VeeJay). but that is not it this lp also came with a photo of the beatles signing the record. We sold the record for $3785.00. To date the magic box has reaped about $5800.00 and still counting.

  22. My home run has to do with vintage sewing patterns. I have had pretty good luck selling regular clothing patterns from the 1950s and earlier, but had run across some vintage patterns for doll clothing. A quick search on eBay showed they were getting around $10-20 EACH, so I thought what the heck? I bought 23 patterns from a lady for $10 (thats 43 cents each). Listing the first 10 netted me about $95 after fees, the second batch of 11, however brought in almost $300! One pattern alone went for $104. Check it out here. Turns out I had a couple patterns that were actually from the 1920s. Love to find a continuous stream of these!
