Profitable Blogging

I hope your Memorial Weekend was filled with thanks for the people who have made our incredible country what it is.  We are so very blessed.

Wanted to tell you about an amazing eBay seller – John at 3rd Power Outlet.  I had emailed him a question about some products that I wanted to purchase…the 1st email response I received was not helpful, vague, and (according to the reply I sent back) made me think that they didn’t want my money.  Ah, not so – I received almost immediately a personal email from the head honcho of the company, John.  He took the time to apologize for the automated response, validated my frustration, cleared up the misunderstanding AND offered me a great opportunity to still shop with him that I couldn’t pass up.  I was VERY impressed with how John handled his customer service.  This message in a newsletter that goes out to tens of thousands of people could have included just the beginning tale if John hadn’t Chose Success and interceded.  He knows his goal for his business is to make money and he brilliantly protected his investment by investing a bit of time with a customer.  HUGE kudos John for some very impressive and empowering customer retention work you did today (and on a holiday too!).

If you ever want to shop with an incredible eBay seller who will take excellent care of you and your purchases, definitely head over to 3rd Power Outlet and see what John has for sale today (among alot of cool bling and outdoor items and athletic gear and biker items, he also has some wonderful pink breast cancer products as well).  He rocks!

We have a brand new Rock Star!!  Congrats to two of our incredible OSI Rock Stars, Cristina and Bryan Heim of www.FlightlineFabrications.com who just welcomed Conner to their home – check it out!!  http://www.flightlinefabrications.com/ci/Connor%20Video%20I%20with%20Music/Connor%20Video%20I%20with%20Music.htm (with Bryan’s permission of course)

And I am SO proud of all of our Rock Stars – they are Choosing Success and amazing things are happening…

Cindy Shebley of www.CloverCityConsulting.com – one of our amazing Rock Stars and photography genius:

·        Was just interviewed by Newsweek about eBay

·        Also received a photo credit on Newsweek for a picture she took

·        AND just got her first book deal – woohoo (more details are coming).  She will be a published author under the Amacon publishing house.

HUGE congrats Cindy on all of your incredible accomplishments – can’t wait to hear more!

Weekly Wealth Tip

“What we ponder and what we think about sets the course of our life. Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish, we can start a new activity. Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

“We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed, “The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves.” We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today.”

Business Insurance - by Cliff Ennico

Big book

YOUR INSURANCE BROKER CAN SAVE YOUR BUSINESS . . .

“I’m just starting a small service business.  Even though I’ve formed a limited liability company (LLC) to run the business, I know that I still need insurance.  But what kind?  I’ve spoken to at least three insurance brokers about my needs, but their advice so far has been all over the place.  Do you have any suggestions?”

First of all, congratulations on realizing that you still need insurance even though you form a corporation or LLC for your business.  A lot of people don’t know that – they think the corporation or LLC will be enough to protect them from legal liability.  But it’s not true – even with a corporation or LLC:

·                                            you are still personally liable for negligent acts or omissions you yourself (as opposed to your business partners) commit;

·                                            you are still personally liable for any business debts and obligations (such as your lease, or a bank line of credit) that you personally guarantee; and

·                                            your business assets (as opposed to your house and other personal assets) are 100% exposed to business creditors, lawsuits and other liabilities.

Self-employed people often don’t treat the insurance profession with the respect it deserves.  I know some agents are extremely aggressive in their sales tactics, but sometimes it’s for your own good.  Let me tell you how my insurance broker saved my business . . .

When I first started my law practice, I made an appointment to speak to my insurance broker about malpractice insurance – I had always worked for large law firms that provided this coverage, and didn’t know the first thing about it.  My broker obtained quotes from several companies, met with me to compare the policies, and together we picked a coverage plan that I felt gave me the protection I needed at a price I could afford.

As I rose to leave her office, my insurance broker said “Sit back down, Cliff.  We’re not done yet.  I’m not going to let you leave this office until you sign up for disability coverage.”

A little taken aback, I responded “Hold on, I know that’s fairly expensive coverage.  Do I really need it?  After all, I’m just practicing law – as long as my brain functions and I’m not in a coma, how can I really be disabled enough not to work?”

“Simple.  You’re going to spend a fair amount of time working out of your house, right?”

“Right.”

“But you’re not going to see clients in your home, right?”

“Right.”

“So when a client wants to meet with you, what are you going to do?”

“Meet them at their office, or at a local restaurant or diner if they don’t have one.”

“And how are you going to get there?”

“I’m going to drive, duh . . . “

“Okay.  So let’s say you break your right foot.”

“No problem.  I can still practice law.”

“But how can you drive a car without your right foot?”

She had me there.  We looked over some disability policies, and I signed up for the cheapest coverage, as I still wasn’t convinced I needed it.

Fast forward five years – a sweltering hot day in July.  I live in a fairly windy part of town, and all of us in the neighborhood have developed creative strategies for keeping the covers on our backyard barbecue grills from blowing away.  Mine was extremely low tech – whenever I finished grilling I placed a 35-pound rock on top of the grill cover.  That sucker wasn’t going nowhere.

Now, I can’t tell you how many hundreds of times I removed that rock from on top of the grill, done my grilling, cleaned the grill, and replaced the rock . . . all without incident.

Not this time.

Maybe my hands were a little greasy, maybe I was momentarily distracted, but when I grabbed the rock this time it slipped out of my hands and fell five feet . . . onto my bare right foot.

Dear readers, please trust me that you do not know the meaning of pain until you drop a 35-pound rock on your bare foot from five feet up.  I was rushed to the local hospital emergency room where they repositioned all the bones and put me in a plaster cast . . . for six weeks.

Did you know you can’t drive a car without your right foot?  For six weeks I was totally incapacitated.  Oh sure, I could work on the computer, but I couldn’t meet with clients, mail documents out, or perform just about any of the clerical chores that come with a corporate law practice.  That disability policy sure came in handy . . . and my broker got a huge gift basket that Christmas.

A good insurance broker is one of your key advisors when you start any kind of small business.  Listen to what they have to say.  And beware of falling rocks . . .

Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.
- Joel A. Barker

Hhhmmm…someone just called me Simon Cowell.  Trying hard to not take it personally, I calmly asked her to explain…

She continued her timely American Idol comparison…

Janelle, everyone knows the sites out there that are the ‘Randy’ sites – looks cool, gives people nicknames that makes them sound cool, and possibly even have cool content, but never gives them much more than that to really grow a successful business.  There isn’t an emotional investment in seeing the members succeed.  Then there are the ‘Paula’ sites which are the worst.  Everyone loves getting compliments and praise, but if there is nothing constructive there to help you grow your business, then I am simply paying you to be a ‘yes’ person in my life – a cheerleader.  Not everything can always be so wonderful and fun and cute.  But you Janelle, you are like Simon Cowell…we don’t always like what you say and we don’t always like how you say it, but we definitely know that your statements are the ones that make or break our businesses.  Watching the contestants on the show, their faces turned respectively to each judge…waiting for Randy to call them a ‘dog’, and then for Paula to compliment their outfit, and then for Simon to deliver the words on if they really are heading down the path to Success or not.  Any feedback they get from him they know is worth gold, literally.  If Randy or Paula offer any advice, the contestant may or may not take it, but they KNOW if they choose to not take Simon’s advice, their singing career won’t be moving further.  Janelle your OSI Rock Stars site is that way.   You offer us the cheerleading, you make us feel cool, but what you really do is offer strong constructive advice on moving forward in our business.  I just wanted to thank you for caring so much about us that you are willing to be like Simon Cowell and ‘booed’ for sticking to your guns and providing us wise and brilliant and right on the money coaching.  I know that all of us have the utmost respect for you and your passion to see us succeed.  Please know that, just like with Simon, you do make us squirm for putting us under the microscope and calling us on certain things, but that in our heart we know you are right and only want to see us be the most you know we can be.  So thanks for being like Simon.

LOL.  I love it – I think.

Here is another great email I just received.  I love CJ’s Success words and mindset.:

Janelle, thanks for your words about “quit the sniveling”  … This is the time to rise to the top, and only those that choose to find the path to the top will win!   We almost never know how much further we have to climb to get the top of the road, could be a few feet, or a few miles, and how far you get every day is not as important as making progress on the journey.   When adversity hits (or should we say the current economic “slowdown”) I try to ask myself, okay what is the lesson I can learn from this one…looking for the silver lining instead of feeling bad and down trodden about the situation is not only a happier place to reside, but offers a smoother road to the top!

I always go back to my tape player (or CD player) and listen to my favorites…. first and foremost Napoleon Hill, then Lou Tice, and now I’ve added the Secret to my list…I come back inspired and full of energy to “getter done!”

Thanks so very much
CJ

THEN there are the emails coming in about the feedback updates on eBay.  eGads people, you can’t be serious.  Are you really ok with wasting this much time on fussing about .1%?  (I’m not and am kind of annoyed that I have now lost the 3 minutes it has taken to write this part of the newsletter).

Is your goal to make money selling products or to have a perfect feedback score…are you going to spend your time today whining on the boards or making your eBay Store better/sourcing another product/learning how to do a blog.  As I told one usually very brilliant and Success minded individual who got caught up in the feedback changes… A perfect feedback score won’t pay the bills, putting your valuable time and energy into selling products will.  K, I’m done…but one of our more patient and understanding and brilliant Rock Stars responded in a fashion much better than I am willing to do right now.  Thanks Dany for your common sense approach to the feedback changes:

THE CRANKY CUSTOMER RETURNS – A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON FEEDBACK

Some time ago, at an eBay University talk, I heard Janelle say that she gets suspicious of sellers with thousands and thousands of positives and not a single negative or neutral feedback. She wasn’t advocating that you go looking for negatives. Of course not. She was encouraging sellers to keep feedback in perspective.

We are business people. Feedback scores aren’t gold stars on a grade school report card. They are guideposts for shoppers. Potential buyers want to know, “Can this seller be trusted to deliver?” If 99.9% of previous customers say yes - that’s good enough for most people. (Conversely, when 12,368 people out of 12,368 people say, “This seller is no mere mortal – she is a veritable Goddess of eCommerce to me!” – sensible people, ask, “Who’s kidding who?”)

I believe that all the sturm and drang over feedback is exacerbated by the lack of face-to-face contact. As any retailer, from Nordstrom’s CEO to a 7-11 clerk, will tell you: you cannot please everyone. Ever. No matter what you do or how hard you try. Someone is always unhappy and - this is key - it is usually not about you.

We are all the center of our own little universes. If I spend a godawful day in traffic and come home to find that FedEx left my package on the ground and it is wet and soggy and the dog scatters the packing peanuts all over the house - well, I will not be a happy camper and I do NOT want to hear about how much YOU care about YOUR feedback score.

I’m pretty sure I could get thousands of glowing feedbacks overnight by selling $5.00 bills for $1.00. I could probably get straight 5 DSRs as well. I could even corner the market! But I’d still be an idiot. I’m not in business to burn money. Know your goals and work relentlessly towards them. Obsessing about a few unflattering feedback ratings will not create success.

Feedback is saturated with emotion, for both the buyer and the seller. Emotion is extremely powerful, but it is neither right nor wrong. Don’t be sucked in to an emotional minefield. Don’t be so overwhelmed by your reaction to someone else’s emotion that you to take your eye off the ball. Feedback is not what you are in business for. Feedback is just one indicator among many of the health and success of your business. Learn from it and move on. Don’t lose sight of your goals.

What is your Proximity to Pain?

The amazing Seth Godin is an eBay fan and will be speaking at Live again this year (as well as on our show, but ssshhhh, it’s a secret!).  He had a brilliant blog post the other day about ‘Proximity to Pain’ talking about being able to charge more depending upon how close you are to the pain – or point of need - part of the buying process.  He uses many great examples like: Scalped tickets cost more than ones bought in advance, by mail.  You can read the entire post at http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2008/05/proximity-to-pa.html

Meatball-sundaeSeth’s post got me thinking (which he is really good at doing)…how could YOU use this simple yet powerful statement to source for eBay.  What kind of products would bring you closer to the ‘point of need’ and make you more money?

I got on a waiting/pre-order lists a few month’s ago for a Wii Fit – as soon as I heard they had an official US launch date.  I paid $89.99 – they launched yesterday and are SOLD OUT.  The ‘point of need’ has hit eBay.  They are selling for $175+ now.

One of my favorite lotions that I have used for years was just sold to a big company, who immediately stopped production.  Normally I would pay $4-5 for a jar on eBay.  NOW if you can find it, the jars are selling for $10-20 on eBay.  Point of Need.

And it doesn’t mean you have to sell scarce products – it can also mean fulfilling a desire or fixing an immediate fear or concern through different marketing.

One of our Rock Stars sells the most amazing product – MP3’s and CD’s of various sounds that help babies sleep – www.PediaSleep.com  I guarantee that his product could be priced even higher.  Why?  What parent wouldn’t give a king’s ransom at 3am after listening to their colicky baby crying for the past 5 hours for a product that would stop the crying?  He helps them make that decision to part with their money by offering up testimonials by other parents who delight in telling anyone who will listen that they bought the product and how fabulous it worked for them during (this is key) their ‘point of need’ or ‘pain’.  He also offers instant downloads to help a parent in ‘pain’ make that decision even quicker.  (you can learn more about digital downloads at www.EasyE-Junkie.com)  If Andrew simply had a website that sold CD’s with sounds, he wouldn’t be pushing the product closer to that proximity of pain.

Do you have products that are already close to the proximity of pain?

Could you make your current products fill that need through different marketing?

I love Seth Godin…
