Feel Your Boobies - Gal to Gal Virtual Walk for Stage 4 Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  In honor of all women, families, husbands, brothers, Grandpas, children, parents, Dads, friends, uncles, sisters, aunts, Moms, grandmas, and anyone who has known a person affected by this, I send you my thoughts, prayers, and hope that one day we won’t have to have a month devoted to this and that pink ribbons will only have to go around packages.

Now men – please don’t tune out the newsletter thinking it has nothing to do with you.  It has everything to do with you.  ALL of you have some female in your life who you care very much about – share this information with her.  And, although it’s only 1% of the females affected, over 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.  Over 20% of them will die.  Please pay attention – this is important – as all of you mean the world to me.

I love this site - http://www.ribbonsofpink.org/first.html - they will email you reminders of when you should do your monthly breast exams.

I wanted to share with you two amazing entrepreneurs with two incredible sites that are helping us get to that goal.  Not only are these sites raising money to eradicate the need for ‘month of’ causes, but they are also two amazing entrepreneurial stories about how these sites were created…

2Gals-for-PRwww.galtogalwalk.org – Jeanne Fitzmaurice is an awe-inspiring entrepreneur who has built up many successful businesses over the years.  This current company was not only created to raise money for Stage 4 Breast Cancer, but is also the first EVER virtual cancer walk in the world.  Come walk with me in October – I already created my ‘gal’.  $3 and 3 minutes (actually took me 2 minutes – lol).  Along with walking with me in October – grab a ‘gal banner’ at www.GalToGo.com and post it on your About Me page, MySpace page, blog, email – anywhere you can think of.  Oh, and don’t forget to tell your friends so they can walk with us too!!

Here is a note from Jeanne herself:

Dear Gal Pals-

At last our hard work over the past 10 weeks is about to come a-live!   I can’t believe that I dared take this project on in such a short period of time and certainly next year we’ll be able to add lots more bells and whistles, but the spirit and intent is there. It takes only 3 minutes (literally!) to log onto www.galtogalwalk.org  and create your virtual walker to join this journey.

I hope you will help us reach our goal to register 1 million walkers over the next 30 days to raise funds for Stage IV breast cancer patients through our Gal to Gal Foundation.   The donation is minimal - $3 (although we always gladly accept more!) - but the result will be priceless as they say!  So many women (and men) who are living with and going through the most critical phase of this insidious disease will benefit from your effort.

On Monday, October 1st (the first day of breast cancer awareness month) we will begin our journey in Boston in honor of my cousin Robin (who you may know passed away at 45 after losing her brave battle to Stage IV - leaving behind a wonderful husband and a six year old daughter).   Tune in to Martha Stewart that day when she features herself joining the Walk! 31 days later we cross the “finish line” on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in memory of Janis Armstrong - who even during the final months of her life - helped us craft the Gal to Gal Foundation’s mission statement.  We will walk through 29 additional cities (one each day) along the way.

Our intent is to utilize the internet as the powerful and positive tool it can be.  To unite us in a way that crosses all faiths, ethnicities and belief systems.    For this journey there are no “blue” or “red” states but only “PINK” ones. The fact is, as my dear friend Carrie Dederich has said - “breast cancer is an equal opportunity destroyer.”   Please pass this email along to all your friends, business associates or anyone you should meet on the street!!   Once registered you will be able “find your friends” on the site and check in every day to watch yourself walk amongst celebrities and thousands of others. You can even create your walker on all the Design-her Gals stationery and gift products.

Although it’s not my nature to ask personal favors - I am now.   Please take the time to help us spread the word! I can’t do it without you and all of our amazing sponsors! I hope to see you at the finish line!

Faithfully yours,

Jeanne Fitzmaurice

Founding Gal

Boobieswww.FeelYourBoobies.com – what started out as a t-shirt design amongst friends has now grown into a massive international movement in just 3 years.  The education on the site alone is worth passing on to your friends - http://store.feelyourboobies.com/knyobo.html

Also, starting October 1st, they will be releasing their couture line of “FYB” products (currently on the site you can buy other “FYB” merchandise).  You will be able to find these at: http://store.feelyourboobies.com/index.html

Also, Leigh, the original ‘boobies’ girl, has started a blog – great reading.  She just wrote the first installment in a series of ‘myths’ about breast cancer.  http://site.feelyourboobies.com/blog/

This is another great line of products that isn’t currently being sold on eBay.  Their fun design is just begging for an eBay Store.  Nicole is who you want to talk about for wholesale orders - nicole@feelyourboobies.com

Blessings for a fabulous week,

Nationally Acclaimed Artist – Nancy Coffelt

I used to work in a building that was across from Portland’s Saturday Market.  Artisans would fill the square on the weekend and I was in awe of their work.  One of my favorites was a woman named Nancy Coffelt who worked with another artist named Carol.  Nancy drew whimsical scenes from the experiences around her at the market, but used animals in place of people.  I remember scraping together enough money to buy a few of her originals which were $10 a piece at that time (a lot of money to me!!).  Fast forward quite a few years and I was back in Portland visiting.  While in an art gallery I saw an entire exhibit of Nancy’s work – with her originals now selling for $500 and up – eeks!  How fabulous for her.  Nancy has written many fabulous children’s books (that she of course illustrated), her artwork was used on a Starbucks mug, and she has collectors of her artwork from all over the world now.  It was a delight to see her selling some of her prints as well as her originals on eBay.  Check out her About Me page explaining why she, a nationally acclaimed artist, has chosen eBay to sell her artwork.  Pretty brilliant!

Erector Set

217f_1Ok, ok…quit fussing about the ‘all girls’ stuff I keep picking – I am a girl after all.  I especially chose today’s Fav for the boys (although this is one of my favorites too!)  Remember those great Erector sets for all budding architects?  What about Tinker Toys?  And remember the Bill Ding Balancing Clowns?

Ethics and being an Entrepreneur

Received this great question from a fellow eBayer (thanks Mary!)…what do you think?

Janelle,

I just listened to the stored podcast from Tim’s first interview with you and I was thrilled to learn that he is a Christian too!  It brought up a thought when he was discussing buying and reselling Bibles–should there be some sort of discussion on your site or in your newsletter about ethics in Ebay sales?  I had someone tell me one time that they thought it was crass to buy and resell Bibles (though bookstores do it every day!!??)  It made me think about something else I bought with the intention of selling on Ebay and then didn’t feel right about.  It was letterhead from one of Hitler’s top officers (not a name I instantly recognized like Goebbels or Himmler, but I thought it valuable).  Like I said, I had a check in my spirit about selling it.  Should I have?  Is there a forum for such discussion–not just what is legal to sell, but what is ethical to sell?

OK, that’s my two cents for what it’s worth!  God bless you and what you’re doing!!

Mary

Now, I know that I am opening up a can of worms on what people consider ethics and ethical…but I think it is a very important subject to talk about and I appreciate Mary for bringing it up.  Now, my two cents…the comment about it being ‘crass’ to resell Bibles ruffled my feathers…actually it ruffled them a lot.  I would love to have a ‘chat’ with the person who told Mary that.  eGads…with people saying things like that it doesn’t surprise me when people bristle at the words Christian or Religion or Church.  First, the comment makes absolutely no sense.  Second, what is crass about getting a Bible into the hands of someone who wants one?  And Third, and also the point of the question of ethics, why is there this idea that it is a bad thing to make money – that somehow it is not Christian or spiritual or ‘nice’ to make money or be rich…’crass’ as the person put it.  I was given these talents and gifts of teaching by God (or whoever you believe in), to help other people be successful, but to also make money…they weren’t given to me so I could put them on a shelf, look at them and watch them wither and die.  I am very blessed that I go to a Church where the Pastor is also an entrepreneurial coach.  It rocks.  I love how he teaches about a wealth mindset (which doesn’t refer to just money)– that we are blessed with so many gifts that we can and SHOULD use.  But, there are other items that I won’t sell and where I won’t cross the line because there are more important things than always making money – like my reputation, and protecting the value of the gifts/talents that were given to me.  (remember, we talked about those a couple of weeks ago in the email called ‘work’)

Ok, my feathers aren’t as ruffled anymore – lol.  What about you?  What item crosses the ethics line with you?  What wouldn’t you sell because of your ethics?  What do you think about eBay’s self-imposed ethics for the site? (certain racial items aren’t allowed, as well as some nazi items, etc)  Click the ‘leave a comment’ link and ruffle away.

 Halloween Costumes

Halloween is my favoritest holiday – even more than Christmas.  I have always loved creating my own costumes and becoming ‘something I am not’.  My costumes at school always drew the oohs and aahs of my peers as well as the award for best costume.  One of my favorite costumes was the year I went as ArthurFonzie” Fonzarelli – even with my blond hair down to my waist!  Of course eBay has some amazing costumes.  Check these out:

These are the CUTEST costumes I have seen for the little guys – I want to be a penguin…ooh, or maybe a shark!

I could be a peacock

Some great Halloween masks!

Oh…I could go as my favorite food

Or my favorite cartoon

Do you think I could get my date to go as Mr. Incredible (almost as good as Mr. Right)

Some gorgeous wings for all of the magical creatures

Definitely need the shoes to match the costume

And of course you can’t forget the pets…

The dog Halloween costumes crack me up – so do the cat ones (I notice it is mainly the dogs modeling the cat costumes – LOL…like any cat is going to put up with a dragon’s costume)
